Details

Perhaps the most simple and lightweight shotgun ammunition available for the 12 gauge, this Winchester Super Target Xtra-Lite Load is a clay shooters bargain round. It is a very versatile load. Better stated: the #9 shot in 2 ¾” with a low base and a 1 ounce shot cup is made specifically for nothing except being quite cheap to shoot, and yet, is perfectly at home on the range killing birds, squirrel, rabbit. It’s good for those who want a close quarters shotshell for apartment dwelling because the risk of penetration through the walls in case of a misplaced shot. It’s good for paper work. It’s good to sight in rough optics. It’s good for cycle testing.

Other than that, it’s best to just go kill fake birds – the orange kind. The lead based load with tiny #9 shot is too lightweight for most fast moving birds – thought it could very well be used for ground based birds, with the right expectations. It’ shouldn’t be used for waterfowl because it’s lead. It’s not as purposeful as say, a #5 shot or a #7 shot or a #00 Buckshot, and yet, you will definitely want to have some of this #9 on the shelf, because sometimes you need to shoot, but you don’t want to spend a ton of money doing it. Sometimes you need less potency, or less recoil, or less pattern close-in. Perhaps #9 shot is just the perfect all-around cheap shot for everything that you don’t already have an answer to.

A: #9 shot is very small and intended for sporting use only, such as shooting clay pigeons or hunting small birds. For self defense, buckshot or slugs are a better choice. Winchester manufactures several examples of both.
