The .357 Magnum was created in 1934 as the result of a collaborative effort between Elmer Keith, Phillip Sharpe, and D.B. Wesson. This cartridge actually started what could be referred to as the “magnum era” of ammunition, and it was largely thanks to renowned outdoorsman and handloader Elmer Keith. One of Keith’s contributions to the cartridge was his Keith-style bullet, which has a broad, flat meplat, a feature which creates greater energy transfer on impact and also enables the bullet to impart more devastating wounds. In addition the Keith-style bullet doesn’t deform like HPs, so it’s able to penetrate more deeply. Although the final .357 Magnum bullet was altered somewhat from the original Keith-style bullet, it retained its finest attributes and is a large part of the round’s success.
These .357 Magnum rounds are manufactured by Federal. At 158 grain they’re considered fairly heavy-weight for the cartridge size, but thanks to the higher internal pressure of the round they’re still able to reach impressive speeds despite their weight. That greater weight also means the rounds pack a heftier punch. These are Jacketed Hollow Points (JHPs) and deliver rapid energy transfer on impact along with controlled expansion. The jacket controls expansion, allowing the bullet to penetrate more deeply than HPs do creating a broader, deeper, and more devastating wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1240 feet per second and muzzle energy of 494 foot-pounds. This is Federal HydroShok ammunition and is specially made for self-defense use.
There are 20 defense rounds in this single box of ammunition. That’s just enough to keep your gun loaded and ready for self-defense, so if you want to get range time in with your chosen defense rounds, you’re going to need to order more than one box. Defense rounds produces more power overall than target rounds, so it’s a wise choice to train with your defense rounds to make sure your shot placement and accuracy is good. This ammunition is manufactured by Federal at their plant in Anoka, Minnesota, where they’ve been in business since 1922. With nearly 100 years of experience behind these defense rounds you can be confident in their performance and reliability. If you want to be prepared, place your order now.
