Impeccable accuracy, a heavy grain weight and a certain utilitarianism from your shotgun, with premium quality and premium benefits. The Hornady 12 gauge 2 ¾” 300 grain Saboted SST Slug with a polymer point is a nearly perfect shotgun hunting round for close and medium range big game hunting.

The SST (Super Shock Tip) by Hornady is a specialty hunting projectile that offers very high end penetration, excellent mushrooming and very flat trajectories. In fact: Hornady claims it is the flattest trajectory on the market and that it will produce sub 2” groups at 100 yards. Note: these claims specify it must be shot out of a rifled barrel.

Furthermore: This slug MUST BE USED in a Rifled barrel. Period.

Taking nothing away from the performance, as this Hornady slug is an excellent choice, but it does come with some cost increase relative to other slug options and it does need to be used in a rifled barrel. In the end: it’s important to balance value with reliability. If you are able to achieve single shot long range kills, and they cost a bit more, there is extreme value there. If a shot is missed because you can’t use a different brand of slug at 140 yards, then the Hornady is worth its weight in gold that day.

A: These will work quite well for hogs. Just keep in mind that these are not a long range projectile.

A: Hornady recommends that this 12ga SST Sabot Slug be fired through rifled shotgun barrels. It would be a good idea to see how these shells shoot and group through your particular shotgun before using it for home defense. In addition, this .458" diameter, 300gr slug exits the muzzle at 2000fps; at typical house distances, it would most likely completely penetrate even the thickest part of a large intruder with the velocity required to do significant damage on the other side.

A: Sabot slugs have a single projectile (similar to a large caliber rifle bullet) encased in a plastic discarding cover, or sabot, which is intended to engage the rifling of a rifled shotgun barrel and offer improved accuracy. Standard shotgun slugs are larger diameter lead projectiles that are intended to be fired through a smooth bore.

A: A sabot slug is so named because the projectile, normally a copper design similar to that which might be used in large bore rifles, is placed inside a plastic "sabot" that bridges the gap between the diameter of the projectile and the larger diameter of the shotgun bore. These sabot slugs might be more accurate than other slug designs, and are likely to have a flatter trajectory, enabling the shooter to accurately place them out to 200 yards. Generally, they should not be fired in rifled shotgun barrels. A rifled slug is composed of lead and is normally about twice the weight of a sabot slug - in this case, more so, as most rifled 12ga slugs weigh around 700gr, while this sabot slug weighs only 300gr. The rifled slug is roughly the same diameter as the shotgun bore.

A: Hornady recommends that these 12ga SST sabot slugs be fired only from a rifled barrel. With the right barrel, groups of two inches or less at 100 yards can be expected. Their listed muzzle velocity is 2000fps.

A: While these SST sabot slugs will definitely fire in a smoothbore shotgun barrel, the manufacturer (Hornady) recommends their use only in rifled barrels due to accuracy reasons.
