The speed of sound is 1125 feet per second. At that speed, there is an additional sound component, where the (in this case) projectile, would break through the “sound barrier” and create an effect that equates to a sharp snapping sound that is quite unenjoyable. Subsonic ammunition does not have this component because it does not break the sound barrier. It is also meant for use in suppressed weapons generally, and can be used as part of an overall system to mitigate uncomfortable sound pollution to the point where shooting is substantially more comfortable.

GemTech is a legacy suppressor manufacturer with a pop culture status due to being one of the first mainstream producers of “silencers” (sound suppressors) in the modern era. This 22lr ammunition was a brainchild of Gemtech (Kel Whelan) and in collaboration with Brett Olin of CCI, the .22 Long Rifle Silencer Subsonic line was born in 2011.

Optimized for suppressor usage, this ammunition provides 1020 feet per second of velocity and just over 100 ft. lbs. (103) of energy at the muzzle in a slightly heavier 42 grain bullet design. The lead projectile has a round nose profile and can cycle most semi autos with suppressors with the adequate, but reduced velocity.

A: Thanks for reaching out David! It doesn't matter whether a firearm has a suppressor or not as far as subsonic ammo is concerned. But I can't guarantee this ammo will generate sufficient chamber pressure to cycle a semi-automatic rifle such as your own. Personally, I'd recommend the Aguila 40gr CPRN ammo for your AR – it's definitely got enough juice in it to cycle your rifle, and though it's a little noisier than subsonic it's going to treat you to a nice, flat trajectory that makes squirrel hunting so much easier.

A: Hello Norman, The Gemtech ammunition is loaded to subsonic velocities.
