The .38 Special is about as venerable a cartridge as there is. It was the standard law enforcement cartridge for many decades, pairing with the ubiquitous S&W Model 10 on officers working the beat (and FBI agents for many years), and in the S&W 36 Chief’s Special residing in the holsters of detectives. If you were a cop up until the 1980s, chances were you were carrying a .38.

These days, the .38 Special is a caliber that still holds definite appeal to wheel gun lovers. Full size revolvers are heavy enough to reduce much felt recoil, and you can leave them fully loaded for a thousand years and there is never going to be a magazine spring to wear out. The snub nosed revolvers, particularly those of S&W, Ruger, and Taurus, are extremely light and unlike micro pistols which are prone to malfunction, will never, ever jam or stovepipe.

Should you choose the .38 for either home defense or concealed carry, you need to practice in a realistic environment. Practice is imperative for all firearms, but maybe even more so for revolvers due to the long, heavy double action pull. Shooting indoors is an excellent experience to invoke realism into shooting, and SinterFire makes an excellent 110 grain frangible slug for just such training. Furthermore, the GreenLine is completely lead free, so you may rest easy knowing there will be no issues of lead exposure. Pick up a couple of boxes today and get used to your new revolver, or reconnect with that old friend in your safe.
