You have to hand it the Great Russian Bear: the 7.62X39mm is a straight-up winner. Since its inception in 1943, it has been a winner in every platform used in. It didn’t hurt that all of the platforms chambered for the 7.62 Soviet were mass produced by the millions and have turned up in every single conflict in the world.

In America the 7.62X39 has never really receded in popularity, so it is unfair to say that it is enjoying a resurgence. Ever since you could pick up a freshly imported SKS for $60 this round has been wildly popular. Dirt cheap, available everywhere, easy on the shoulder and fairly accurate, it has found its way into a number of prominent American firearm manufacturers lineups as autoloaders and bolt action rifles. It is well adapted for varmint hunting, hog hunting, and even the occasional deer. It also makes a deadly personal defense round, and has the track record to prove it.

Sellier & Bellot is no stranger to the scene and has been importing good ammo to the states for a long time. Their 123 grain SP is a nice full-brass cased soft point which boasts 2,437 fps at the muzzle with 1,622 ft. lbs. of energy. The bullet still carries 1,381 fps and 521 ft. lbs. all the way out at 400 yards, although it does drop over 52 inches. This caliber is best suited for anything 200 yards and under.

This is a very capable caliber for a wide variety of applications, and is available in a broad array of platforms. Sellier & Bellot’s 123 grain soft point will make short work of lots of varmints, and might just put some venison or pork on your table! Grab up a few boxes while they last.
