Hornady SST shotgun shells use the company’s Superformance round,
a sabot package that delivers the MonoFlex projectile, a copper-plated, Hornady
Flex Tip slug. The MonoFlex is a 95% copper, 5% zinc slug that behaves like a
giant hollow point bullet and has enough power to take down an Alaskan moose or
anything smaller. Superformance shells are loaded with special propellants to
deliver flat trajectories and maximize energy transfer; meanwhile, the sabot
and gas seals in the shell direct the charge’s forces in the correct direction
to ensure the slug leaves the muzzle at around 1,628 feet per second and flies
true to its target. Each box contains 5 shells.

Q: I live in Nevada now, but i often travel back to Ca to hunt where I grew up. These are non lead rounds correct? I've done a lot of research and I know the FTX rounds are lead. I just want to make sure that these will be suitable to have when I cross the Ca line, before I purchase them

A: Sorry sir, but this round's slug does contain lead and isn't legal for hunting in California. Hornady doesn't make a lead-free 20ga slug. I'm afraid we haven't got what you're after in stock. (I'd recommend Barnes VOR-TX Expander 20ga ammo if you can find it. Its product number is XPDR20.)
Q: Do these need to be shot from a rifled barrel to have the same performance or is smooth bore acceptable?

A: Thanks for reaching out Tom! A sabot slug essentially needs a rifled barrel. This shell will fire in a smoothbore shotgun, and the slug will come out, but it will be horribly inaccurate and will likely hit its target sideways in a phenomenon known as "keyholing."
