Details

Federal’s target load for 20 gauge skeet and clay shooters is distinguishable from other calibers by its bright yellow hull and the silver tall base. This low cost, consistent performer is a #9 shot, 7/8 ounce load that makes the sporting end of it slightly more challenging than with run of the mill 12 gauge loads, but infinitely more enjoyable thanks to the clean reliability of the high based, high quality shells and the lower recoil of the 20 gauge.

The #9 shot is small, but the payload provides a good, versatile specimen for those using chokes and understanding the dialing in of these very consistent velocity rounds (1210 feet per second out of the muzzle). The reduction in recoil and the low cost more than make up for the slight cost increase over their 12 gauge counterparts. The story of this bulk buy is the exceptional quality for such a low priced 20 gauge round, and the proven history of the reliability and versatility of this round for this caliber and shooting scenario. As far as bargain target loads go, this is a fine choice for anything small game or target related where a #9 shot will work in a moderate power load for 20 gauge shooting.

A: Birdshot is intended to kill birds and break clay pigeons, not penetrate deep enough into the body of a violent attacker to rapidly and reliably stop them from threatening you. If you are going to use a shotgun for self defense, choose buckshot or slugs, not birdshot.

A: Your friend's shotgun might need to have the hammer spring replaced or other internal components inspected. What was most likely happening is that the Winchester primers are slightly harder, and require more force to ignite. The Federal primers might be slightly softer. As for shot size, #9 shot is smaller than #7 and therefore each shell will have more individual lead shot "pellets" by quantity. For skeet and trap, this might come in handy; for hunting upland game, a "lower" number like 7 shot will provide cleaner kills.
