The .30 Carbine is somewhat of an anomaly. Despite never being produced in a variety of firearms, in fact only just a couple beyond the original M-1 carbine which the cartridge was designed for. Yet it remains a popular caliber for a popular rifle of which there are still a considerable number in circulation, along with a couple of manufacturers who reproduce them under license.
So what makes the M-1 carbine still sought after nearly a century after it was produced? Probably the same reason the M-1 Garand, M1911, Mosin-Nagant, etc. are all still wildly popular: they are great guns.
The M-1 carbine was sort of the military precursor to the M4 concept of carbine. It was light, compact, and easy to handle with very little recoil, and quite accurate. Reserved for troops in support rolls (quartermaster, supply, clerks), it was a designed to offer more range accuracy, and power than a sidearm but still be easy to carry. The paratrooper variant was produced with a folding stock to allow an extremely compact carbine for jumps which still retained better range than the pistol-caliber sub-machine guns.
What is particularly endearing about the cartridge is the ammo remains relatively inexpensive, being packaged and sold in 50-round boxes and priced similarly to handgun ammo. And talk about a great ranch gun! With a standard capacity of 15 rounds and long 30 round magazines, you can make short work out of ranch varmints and predators alike.
