The .45 ACP still stands as one of the undisputed handgun heavyweights, both in terms of volume sold as well as actual projectile weight. It is a big bore cartridge which packs a heavy punch.

.45 ACP slugs commonly come in two varieties: 185 grain “light” slugs, and then the hefty 230 grain offerings. While their ballistics do not appear particularly impressive on paper, the .45 ACP has a very long and storied history of knocking down whatever it comes in contact with. This is an intangible quality which developed a great reputation, particularly during and after World War II, where it was well known to literally knock down enemy combatants.

Colt produces a small lineup of ammunition which they do not go out of their way to advertise much, and in fact did not show up at all on search engine queries. After manually searching the official Colt website, a small lineup of ammunition was discovered, although they posted no ballistics. This particular sampling is a solid copper hollow point (SCHP), weighing in at a common 185 grains. It is rumored that Colt makes their ammunition in conjunction with Black Hills, so pulling the data from Black Hills shows a 185 grain jacketed hollow point having a velocity of 1,000 fps, and muzzle energy of 411 ft. lbs. Compare this to the hefty 230 grain JHP which lumbers along at 850 fps with 369 ft. lbs of energy.

This is a good option for your everyday carry sidearm, particularly if low-lead is a serious concern for you. The lighter loading in this JHP allows for high velocity, resulting in better expansion of the bullet once it impacts soft tissue, and you are not going to find a better deal than picking it up in a 200 round case.
