THIS IS FACTORY SECONDS AMMUNITION. We do not know why it failed to meet Federal’s standards for duty ammunition. That information is not available to us. But whatever Federal’s reasons might be, we have determined that this ammo functions correctly and performs as expected.
Is a 308 Win rifle too powerful for home defense? We’ll leave that debate be for the time being. But one thing is for certain: It’s not too weak.
Federal loads their “Law Enforcement” series ammunition for a very specific demographic. It doesn’t matter if you don’t belong to it. This LE grade 308 Win ammo can still belong to you!
This round’s 168 grain Tactical Bonded Tip has a bonded jacket (obviously) – fused to its lead core, so the bullet doesn’t shed more than a couple grains of its weight as it passes through heavy clothing, drywall, or even sheet metal. In addition to streamlining the bullet for accurate flight (0.452 G1 BC), the Tactical Bonded Tip’s tip helps it reliably initiate expansion under a broad range of conditions.
Federal has published this ammo’s performance on the FBI test protocol. Here it is, broken down by barrier type:
• Bare ordnance gel: 21.25” penetration; 0.725” expansion; 98.2% weight retention
• Heavy clothing: 22.50” penetration; 0.653” expansion; 98.6% weight retention
• Steel: 24.00” penetration; 0.734” expansion; 98.5% weight retention
• Wall board: 23.00” penetration; 0.753” expansion; 99.1% weight retention
• Plywood: 24.00” penetration; 0.594” expansion; 94.0% weight retention
• Safety glass: 19.00” penetration; 0.579” expansion; 66.7% weight retention
The finishing touch? Nickel-plated brass cases. They’re smooth to promote more efficient functionality within a rifle, and protected against the kinds of moisture and chemicals that gradually corrode brass.
