The 20 Gauge may always be “the other, smaller shotgun,” but that doesn’t mean it can’t hit muzzle velocities befitting of the more popular twelve. When you’re chambering the power of Rio Royal Star, your slug gun’ll fire lighting!
Rio didn’t give this shell a hyper 1,360 fps muzzle velocity by loading it with a little squeaker of a projectile. We’re talking about a 7/8 ounce lead bolt – rifled, for safe operation in a choked barrel, and heavy enough to emerge with over 1,500 ft lbs of kinetic energy. Flat trajectory plus massive stopping power equal lights out for Mr. Deer, or perhaps even Mrs. Hog depending on which kind of fun you’re getting yourself into.
Rio’s high-quality shotgun shells originate in two places: Spain, where Rio’s owner MAXAM operates, and Marshall, Texas, which is the site of their USA operations. MAXAM makes explosives for sale in six out of seven continents (the penguins apparently have no use for them). Their ammo’s primers and powder bear all the hallmarks of a manufacturer that truly knows that it is doing.
