Strictly speaking, this is not the same exact 5.56x45 Mk 262 Mod 1 ammunition that Black Hills developed and manufactures for U.S. military sniper teams. It is Mod 1-C, which is held to identical accuracy standards, assembled with the same components, and loaded on the same machinery. It just isn’t subjected to the additional testing it would require to lose its Mod 1-C designation.
This cartridge’s bullet is Sierra’s 77 grain MatchKing – an open tip match that possesses a tight and narrow meplat, form-fitted lead core, virtually flawless jacket concentricity and carefully standardized overall weight (which is rearward situated for better in-flight stability). At Black Hills’ request, this round’s MatchKing somewhat uniquely features a cannelure. It keeps the bullet planted in the case mouth while recoil bucks the cartridge around in a magazine.
This certainly isn’t plinking ammunition, and the MatchKing cannot supply the terminal expansion that would have suited it for hunting applications. But when your only goal is accuracy – and your barrel’s twist is 1:6" to 1:8" – Mk 262 Mod 1-C is going to serve your purposes mighty splendidly. This new production reloadable brass-cased ammo comes packaged in a brand new milspec steel ammo can.
