Steel. It is used to make motorcycles. It is used to make motorcycle ramps. It is used to make school buses. Without steel, no one would be able to jump over school buses on motorcycles. Does that sound like the kind of world you would want to live in? We think not!

But did you know that steel can also be used to manufacture cost-effective shell casings? That’s right! Thanks to Magtech’s Steel line of ammunition, you can now avoid paying for a significant amount of brass when you stock up on 9mm range ammo!

This ammo’s steel cases are extra shiny because they are plated in corrosion-resistant zinc. The one big caveat with steel cases is that they are absolutely worthless as handloading components, however, so do not make plans to reload these Brazilian-made rounds.

This ammo is completely noncorrosive. Its cases will attract a magnet, quite naturally, although its 115 grain full metal jacket bullets will not. They have lead cores and copper-alloy jackets, and they’re due to clear a 4” barrel’s muzzle at a velocity of 1,135 fps – just faster than the speed of sound, although you can still expect fairly low recoil.

Introduction:

Magtech Steel 9mm 115gr FMJ receives strong praise for affordability and reliable function in many pistols and carbines, especially as a dedicated range or training ammunition. However, significant patterns of extractor failures and malfunctions are reported, most notably in Sig Sauer P365-series pistols and some other subcompacts.

Overall Rating:

(Mixed Reviews)
Best For: High-Volume Range Training (excluding Sig P365/XL and similar subcompacts)
Key Pro: Outstanding Value for Money and General Reliability in Most Pistols
Key Nuance: Steel Case (Not Reloadable, Potential for Extractor Wear)

Detailed Analysis:

What Shooters Praise (The Pros)

Reliability

Consistently reliable in Glock, Canik, Beretta, Ruger, S&W M&P, and many carbines, with thousands of rounds reported and virtually no jams or failures in these platforms. In contrast, severe extractor failures, frequent jams, and stuck casings are repeatedly reported in Sig P365-series pistols, with multiple reviewers breaking extractors after hundreds of rounds.

Performance

Performance is rated highly for accuracy and clean cycling in numerous range and target contexts. Some shooters note slightly more visible muzzle flash and dirtier residue compared to brass ammo, but overall shooting quality is consistent, especially for standard pistols and carbines. Reports of poor extraction, jams, and part breakage are specific to certain models, mainly Sig P365/XL/Macro.

Bargain

Unanimous consensus that the price is exceptional, with bulk-sale options frequently described as the cheapest available for new 9mm FMJ. Value for money is a standout feature, making it attractive for high-volume shooters, provided firearm compatibility is confirmed.

What to Know (The Nuances)

- Steel cased (non-reloadable), easy to pick up with a magnet
- Mixed reports on cleanliness: many call it clean, but several shooters note it is somewhat dirtier than brass and requires more frequent cleaning
- Noticeable increase in muzzle flash compared to brass (reported occasionally)
- Extractor wear and breakage strongly associated with Sig P365-series and similar subcompact pistols; no major issues noted in Glocks, Caniks, Beretta, Ruger, or S&W M&P
- Some isolated cases of jams and stuck cases, usually with specific pistols
- Shipping and customer service consistently fast and reliable
- Incompatibility or risk for lighter, subcompact models must be strongly considered

Conclusion

Magtech Steel 9mm FMJ stands out as a top value bulk ammo for range training, offering stellar reliability and function in most standard pistols and carbines from major manufacturers, especially at a very competitive price. However, users of Sig P365-series and similar subcompact pistols should avoid this ammo due to consistent patterns of extractor breakage and malfunctions. For the majority of shooters with duty-sized or compact handguns (particularly Glock, Canik, Beretta, Ruger, S&W), it's a trusted, affordable choice—just account for typical steel case trade-offs such as non-reloadability and slightly increased cleaning needs.

A: Hi Ronald! This ammo is absolutely capable of neutralizing a threat. That said, brass-cased JHP ammo is *far* more preferable for personal protection. I'd recommend keeping a mag loaded with police-grade ammo, just in case: https://www.bulkammo.com/bulk-9mm-ammo-9mm124grjhpspeergd-50

A: Thanks for reaching out Chris! This round's FMJ bullet has a lead core and copper jacket. No steel; no attraction to a magnet. Happy shooting!
