This cartridge’s bullet weighs 64 grains – a bit heavier than normal, which gives it a little extra momentum that it can use to press deep into flesh. The Hi-Shok soft point conserves a good percentage of its weight as it passes through soft and hard media alike, and can easily overcome a barrier without fragmenting so much that it becomes ineffective. The Hi-Shok delivers rapid, controlled expansion under a wide range of conditions. High-velocity impact? Lower-velocity impact? Both are green flags for the Hi-Shok to start showing off its extremely effective terminal ballistics.

Federal grabbed this round’s 3,050 fps muzzle velocity using a 24” test barrel. It still works great in AR-15 and M16 style carbines and pistols. They’ll just produce (indeterminately) lower muzzle velocities!
