It’s perfectly alright to test out cheap, possibly-not-great 223 Rem at the range. The stakes there are zilch. But when all the cards are on the table – and the rifle you’re holding will determine whether or not you survive the night – you’ll wish you’d invested in the absolute best.
Be glad you did. Order yourself a few boxes of Speer’s law enforcement grade (and commercially available) Gold Dot ammunition.
This ammo is all premium components. Its primers are CCI’s best. Its propellant is low-flash to prevent night blindness. Its nickel-plated cases are slick and resistant to tarnishing. But the real star of the show? That 62 grain soft point bullet – the Gold Dot itself.
This round’s 62 grain electrochemically bonded soft point passes the FBI test protocol (which assess a cartridge’s effectiveness at neutralizing a threat under a wide range of circumstances) with high marks. By resisting fragmentation, the bullet is able to pierce heavy clothing and then tunnel around 14.5” though ordnance gelatin (following close-range impact). The Gold Dot can widen to more than three times its original diameter under those conditions – yet another reason why it’s good for the defender and bad for the threat.
