Black Hills makes some of America’s best cartridges, but they don’t actually manufacture their own components. They turn to other industry leaders for that, as is exemplified by this 223 Rem cartridge’s 60 grain V-MAX by Hornady. If you’ve got a varmint on your hit list, the V-MAX is going to make short work of the job.

The secret to the V-MAX’s explosive terminal performance is in its tip. The polymer prong is set on the rim of the bullet’s jacket, and extends down into a shaft formed within the swaged lead core. The V-MAX only touches the base of that shaft after it has built up tremendous energy following impact, at which point it transforms the V-MAX into a dynamic flurry of lead and copper shrapnel.

The V-MAX boasts some hair-splitting accuracy to accompany so much terminal performance. The bullet’s Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket is extremely concentric to keep it balanced in flight, and its streamlined tip and profile grant it an impressive ballistic coefficient. The V-MAX holds onto a great deal of its velocity at great distances, giving it a flatter trajectory and more energy with which to do its exploding trick inside of a varmint.

Black Hills applied their characteristic expertise to this round’s assembly, giving it the precision formed brass, reliable primer, and clean burning propellant it needs to best support its V-MAX’s impressive in-flight and terminal ballistics.
