Contrary to what you might have been told, you can use quite literally any 223 Rem ammo for home defense. As to whether or not you will succeed is a whole different story.

If you’re of the opinion that success is preferable, then you should not, in fact, use just any 223 Rem ammo for home defense. You should instead use the Speer Gold Dot you see before you.

This is law enforcement ammo, though you may most certainly purchase and use it if you aren’t law enforcement. It’s special because it is loaded with true bonded bullets: heavyweight 62 grain soft points with electrochemically fused-together jackets and cores, which resist splitting apart after impact so as to promote very deep penetration. The bonded soft point is designed to undergo terminal expansion under a wide range of conditions – including when it is fired out of a barrel as short as 10” – so you can rest assured you’re packing sufficient firepower for whichever unsavory task happens to be at hand.

Speer’s nickel-plated brass cases help semi-automatics behave more reliably, and also protect against corrosion in storage. Their propellant is formulated to minimize muzzle flash, which can save your visual acuity if you ever have to fire on a threat in the dark. Here’s hoping you don’t!
