#8 lead shot is a small birdshot load that’s very popular at the range. It’s most often used for trap or skeet shooting thanks to the high number of pellets that offer a dense pattern even at long ranges. If your range requires you to use steel shot, consider stepping up a size or two; steel shot is lighter than lead and often requires a larger pellet to reach the same ballistics.
#8 lead shot can be used for hunting small game at close ranges, but the small pellets have difficulty penetrating fur and feathers. It can also make your prey difficult to eat since it tends to pepper it with lots of tiny pellets.
