Details

A very interesting 9x19 round by Magtech with personal defense numbers and value pricing. The jacketed soft point projectile in this 124 grain load offers some good deformation at a slightly elevated price point, but nowhere near typical self defense round pricing. It offers a good middle ground between highly engineered self defense JHP’s and ball ammo, with better than ball ammo performance.

You can truly shoot the same thing at the range as you keep in your magazines for defensive carry purposes, and feel pretty good about the stopping power, reliability, functionality and accuracy. You’ll know the round because you train with the round, and the ballistics are above average on the load. With 1110 feet per second velocity and 340 ft. lbs. of energy, you can be assured that the cartridge delivers in the same zone as dedicated hollow point rounds, generally speaking. It doesn’t tout the highest numbers but it offers respectable ballistics. The feeding and fouling won’t be a problem because the modified design of the bullet allows for full copper engagement on the rifling and the engineering of the projectile is very close to standard ball ammunition.

A: Hi James! I'm not an attorney and am in no way qualified to give legal advice, but it is my understanding that hollow points are downright illegal in NJ under all but a few very specific circumstances. Certainly not legal for everyday carry, at least. I regret that I haven't seen a polymer-filled HP for some time – not since Federal Guard Dog went away, if I recall correctly. The FTX is *kind of* polymer filled, but it's still definitely an HP by the classic definition. It's perfectly sensible to worry about over-penetration, though you can never eliminate the risk. That being said, you can mitigate it. Now, this isn't technically hollow point ammo, but I do not understand the NJ legal system well enough to promise you're safe carrying it: https://www.bulkammo.com/20-rounds-of-9mm-ammo-by-black-hills-ammunition-125gr-honeybadger . I believe Sellier & Bellot's soft point ammo would also be acceptable: https://www.bulkammo.com/bulk-9mm-ammo-9mm124grspsb-50 . But again – and I cannot impress this on you too much – I am not an attorney. Please confirm the legality of your carry ammo on your own. Thanks for reaching out, and God bless!
