The 45-70 Government is what we like to call a “legacy cartridge.” Like the 9mm Luger and 30-06 Springfield that came after it, the 45-70 has been around longer than any living person. No one you meet has ever occupied a world without it!
But that doesn’t mean the 45-70 hasn’t kept up with the times. With the upsurge in popularity of polymer tip bullets in recent decades, it was only a matter of time before the 45-70 started offering them, too.
This is Remington Core-Lokt Tipped Lever Gun ammunition: loaded with 300 grain Core-Lokt Tipped bullets. Is it safe for lever guns? Brother, it is designed specifically for them, hence the hard polymer tip’s flat surface. Is it a gimmick? Not remotely. In addition to making the Core-Lokt Tipped projectile more aerodynamic (0.197 G1 BC), that polymer tip drives into the lead core on impact. In doing so, it catalyzes the deadly wide terminal expansion that easily sends any boar, deer or black bear into early retirement.
You most certainly can handload Remington’s strong, rimmed, pin-straight brass cases!
