Hornady’s Frontier line of ammunition gives shooters the best of two worlds. Because this 5.56x45 cartridge was loaded at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, the single largest supplier of small arms ammo to the U.S. Armed Forces, it features a military grade primer and charge of propellant. Its brass is also up to mil-spec standards, and has very clearly been annealed around its neck to promote more efficient ignition as well as superior longevity for handloaders.

Hornady complemented Lake City’s hard work with a bullet of their own creation. At 62 grains, it’s over 10 percent heavier than your everyday 5.56 bullet to give it greater resistance to wind drift as well as more energy to transfer at close range. This is a soft point bullet, with a partial jacket that reveals its lead core at the tip. Its jacket prevents this bullet from deforming during ignition, helps it to penetrate its target more reliably, and holds it together as it bores through soft tissue. Its tip causes the bullet to spread out as it penetrates the target, creating a wide wound channel and displacing more energy in the process. It’s the simplest design an expanding bullet can have, and it’s been around for a long time because it works so well.

You would find that this round’s soft point bullet suits it as well for varmint hunting as it does personal protection. And if all you want to shoot are some stationary targets, this Frontier load will definitely do you right!

Please note: 5.56x45 has identical dimensions to 223 Rem but is loaded to higher pressure. Do not fire this ammo in a firearm chambered solely for 223 Rem.
