A lot of people see magnetic ammunition like this 5.56x45 by Ammo Inc. and assume it’s low-grade AR fodder. But this SS109 cartridge’s ability to attract a magnet actually indicates something special about it: its penetrator tip.
Although it hasn’t got a green-painted tip like an M855 projectile, this round’s 62 grain FMJ also contains a solid steel spike in the front section of its core beneath its jacket. This piece of metal equips the SS109 to pierce sheet metal, wallboard, plywood and other hard barriers like a champ! Its heavier weight also gives it more momentum and resultant energy for deeper penetration, and the dual-core bullet’s tendency to split in half while penetrating soft tissue spells even bigger trouble for a threat.
This ammo is loaded in America with virgin brass cases – precisely the kind handloaders like. Ammo Inc.’s propellant is formulated to leave behind as little residue as possible, and their Boxer primers are non-corrosive. Some ranges prohibit magnetic ammo like this, but the ones that don’t are cool!
