Are you looking for accuracy? Then you must already have a great deal of it, because you’ve just pinpointed the perfect 308 Win for precision shooting: Hornady American Gunner!
Hornady commonly gives their bullets catchy brand names. This round’s 155 grain hollow point boat tail is an exception, but it’s no less worthy of applause. It combines a thin and highly concentric jacket with a form-fitted lead core to achieve great balance, and possesses the narrow point and boat tail it needs to avoid stirring up very much drag. Fire it out of a 24” test barrel, and the 0.405 G1 BC projectile can easily pass 300 yards with over three-quarters of its starting velocity intact.
Newer shooters must take care to understand what the HPBT isn’t – i.e. a hunting bullet. Its little nose cavity is simply the byproduct of a manufacturing process that produces a very accurate bullet. It does not bestow the HPBT with the power of terminal expansion. Still kills varmints, though!
