Ammo Overview

Ammo Quantity - 20 Rounds Per Box
Ammo Manufacturer - Federal American Eagle
Bullets - 62 grain full metal jacket boat tail(FMJ-BT)
Ammo Casings - Boxer-primed brass

Expect strong accuracy and relatively clean operation with these .223 rounds in your AR-15. This .223 ammunition from Federal is loaded to specs comparable to M855 ball ammunition. Like the M855, it uses a 62 grain full metal jacket round with a boat tail. The heavier bullet slows the muzzle velocity to 2,713 feet per second, but results in better penetration. Those cardboard targets will never see it coming! Each box holds 20 rounds in Boxer-primed reloadable brass cases.

Federal Premium Ammunition is the top manufacturer of mil-spec 223 and 5.56 NATO ammunition in the United States. As a division of defense contractor Alliant Techsystems, it operates the US government’s ammunition plant at Lake City in Independence, Missouri in addition to its own headquarters and factory in Anoka, Minnesota. Federal was founded in 1922 and experienced rapid through then-unusual marketing tactics such as selling ammo in non-sporting retail outlets. It was one of several ammunition contractors for the US military during World War II.

A: Federal lists the velocity of this ammunition at 3020fps, which is close to the velocity of M855 from an AR-15, but that is from a 24" test barrel. Depending on the distance you are shooting, the length of your barrel, and your personal preferences, sight adjustments may or may not be required. With a 100 yard zero, and if M855 was 200fps faster out of your rifle's barrel, it would impact 3/4" higher at 200 yards, 2.5" higher at 300 yards, and 5.5" higher at 400 yards than this Federal .223 62gr FMJBT. Trajectory differences would be roughly halved if the velocity difference was 100fps.
