Details

Federal's Gold Medal ammo loaded with 168 grain Sierra Match King bullets is considered the commercial market leader for 308 match ammo. Federal uses the best ingredients in this proven recipe with carefully designed brass cases topped with Sierra's incredibly consistent and concentric 168 grain hollow point boat tail bullets. The thin jacket of this match ammo helps the bullet expand as it travels down the barrel to have good contact with the grooves and lands the whole way down helping compensate in any imperfections that your barrel may have. Federal uses only Gold Medal primers that are highly consistent from shot to shot to shot.

If you've never shot this GM308M load and usually shoot regular FMJ ammo try a box next time at the range compared to your standard load and you'll be impressed with the tighter groupings that you'll achieve. When you're looking for precision, Federal's Gold Medal line loaded in Minnesota is a great choice.

Detailed Analysis:

What Shooters Praise (The Pros)

Reliability

Reliability is repeatedly highlighted, with reports of flawless cycling, zero failures to feed or eject, and consistent sub-MOA groupings across numerous rifles, including semi-autos and bolt-actions. Several reviewers mention decades of use without a single malfunction.

Performance

Performance is the standout feature, with shooters regularly achieving 0.25–1 MOA groups out to 1,000 yards. Numerous rifles of varying makes and barrel lengths deliver tight, repeatable patterns, and bullet drop and wind calculations are described as very predictable. The ammunition is noted for boosting shooter confidence and not being the weak link in accuracy.

Bargain

While some users acknowledge the price is on the higher side compared to bulk or plinking ammo, nearly all agree the quality justifies the cost. Frequent promotional pricing and rapid, reliable shipping add to perceived value, and many consider it superior even to handloads for their purposes.

What to Know (The Nuances)

- Cleanliness: Most feedback reports clean burning ammo with little residue, though this is not a dominant discussion point.
- Casing Material: Factory brass-cased rounds, generally suitable for those not focused on reloading; a few mention using factory over handloads due to consistency.
- Packaging: One user noted older packaging (blue and white boxes) rather than the latest; no negative impact on performance reported.
- Use Case Fit: While suitable for hunting with precise shot placement, users note it's not a dedicated hunting round and softer hunting bullets offer more knock-down power.
- Value Perception: Price considered fair for performance, though a minority have seen marginally better deals elsewhere.

Conclusion

This Federal .308, loaded with 168-grain Sierra MatchKing projectiles, is enthusiastically endorsed by precision shooters, competitive marksmen, and hunters prioritizing accuracy. It excels in reliability and repeatable accuracy, consistently outperforming both standard factory ammo and some handloads. While it's a premium-priced product, the vast majority of users feel the results more than justify the expense. Ideal for serious long-range shooters and anyone demanding top-tier performance from factory ammunition, with only minor nuances for those considering price or packaging as a factor.

A: Hi John! It's not ideal for medium game. The Sierra MatchKing's thin jacket and inability to undergo expansion means it has suboptimal terminal ballistics for deer and such.

A: Hi Rick. Thanks for looking to BulkAmmo.com for your ammo needs. Sometimes these two calibers can cause inaccuracies, especailly when it comes to Match grade ammo and guns. I suggest that you give Springfield Armory a quick call and ask them. They will have the final word as to how well these will do in your rifle. Give me a shout if I can get you some great ammo on the way! Have a great day. Ronnie

A: Yes, this should be a very accurate load for that rifle

A: Thank you for turning to Bulk Ammo for your ammunition information! The Sierra Match King projectiles are lead core with a copper jacket and have no iron or steel content that would draw a magnet.

A: Primer type is an issue, but practically all new production brass ammunition has boxer primers and cases designed for boxer primers, which means that they are reloadable. These Federal Gold Match cases are boxer primed and ideal for reloading.
