An outstanding all-around 38 SPL load by Hornady in their “Custom” line of products, this is a nice load for those new ultra-light weight .38 special handguns that are not built to handle +P loads. This is a simple, standard load with legitimate defensive performance enhancements, including the proven, well-known XTP by Hornady that offers great consistency in penetration and accuracy that is virtually unmatched in the hollow point world. This is also a well put together round that utilizes some of the strictest production protocols and a lineup of some of the best production tolerances in the world. Yes you’re paying for the privilege, but the accuracy, consistency and performance for a standard .38 Special is hard to match.

This is a 125 grain projectile which doesn’t move particularly fast, but it is evenly balanced for the load, and gives good speed at 900 feet per second velocity out of the muzzle. The 225 ft. lbs. of energy delivery is not massive, but it is a well-earned number for a standard .38 Special. The static ballistics aren’t what makes this a legitimate choice though, it is instead, the value of the assembled components and the build quality of the load. These points are nearly perfect, and earn the Hornady Custom for this load a particularly impressive reputation.
