Speer Gold Dot self-defense ammunition uses their UNI-COR method to bond the jacket and the core at the beginning of the manufacturing process. This essentially eliminates any core and jacket separation, making for a more consistent and accurate hollow point. Each round uses CCI boxer-primers, clean burning powder and nickel plated, reloadable brass cases to ensure performance over a wide variety of pistols. Each bullet also goes through a two-step process for the hollow point cavity, giving Speer control over how far the bullet will expand and its rate of expansion.

Q: Will your Speer gold dot. 38 dot plus 125 gr or 138 gr fit a S&W 642 1 7/8” barrel or do I have to find that same bullet listed for “short barrel”?

A: Hi Mike! I own that revolver and am quite familiar with its capabilities. Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel ammunition is optimized to perform wein conjunction with a barrel that is as short as 1.9" – less recoil, more reliable terminal expansion. That said, there is zero reason to expect ineffective performance from ammo that isn't marketed as ideal for short barrels. I'm not saying Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel series ammo is just marketing – there is good science backing it. That said, S&W did not design the 642 to exclusively function as intended while it's firing special short barrel ammo. I'd highly recommend the Speer Gold Dot 38 Spl +P 125gr JHP ammo for personal defense with your revolver. That said, convention does hold that a heavier bullet delivers deeper penetration, which would be a welcome advantage considering the lower muzzle velocity you should expect out of a shorter barrel. Q: will this ammo fit my Colt Diamond back?

A: Thanks for reaching out Captain! Obvoiusly not with the 22 LR or 22 WMR models (which I'm sure you're aware of, but other people will be able to read this answer). That said, the 38 Spl model is able to fire +P loads just fine!
