The 44 Magnum, a round made famous in the 1971 Classic Police film “Dirty Harry”, is referred to as “the most powerful handgun in the world”. The ammunition and firearms world has since developed ever stronger loads and larger calibers, but the 44 mag is still one of the most popular and most varied. The 44 Magnum was developed in the early 1950’s by a shooter, writer, and hand loader named Elmer Keith. He designed it using the 44 Special case, tuned it with heavier bullets and a more powerful powder load. The 44 Magnum was put into production by Remington, Smith and Wesson, followed by Ruger. Revolvers manufactured in this caliber have remained in production ever since.
