The M855 projectile is heavier than the 55 grain standard for M193, so it’s helped along through cross and vertical winds by added momentum. But its relatively higher downrange energy isn’t the real reason why the M855 bullet is dubbed “penetrator.” Just beneath its copper-alloy jacket’s painted tip rests a pointed steel insert. This hardens the projectile to facilitate its passage through barriers, e.g. light body armor and vehicles.
