This is one of many Federal lines made for the .45 ACP. While it isn’t their ultra-premium self-defense ammunition this is a potent .45 Auto load that can be used for the range, on targets or for personal protection. The projectile is a 185 grain Hi-Shok bullet, and the line is called the Federal Classic Personal Defense. It has moderate performance and good reliability. The projectile can achieve velocity of 950 feet per second and it delivers 371 ft. lbs. of energy at the bore.
This 45 ACP ammo is reliable in most guns out of the box but it thrives in the mainstream offerings from Springfield, Glock and Smith & Wesson and does especially well in the polymer framed guns. It is not the heaviest powder charge, so it isn’t as hot as some other 185 grain rounds, lending itself to easier recoil and making a faster follow up shot possible.
A Boxer primer inside of a pristine brass case makes this an easy to reload ammunition and the bullet is a proven performer in ballistic gelatin and in real world, duty use. For the price point it would be difficult to find another personal protection handgun ammunition in .45ACP that can perform this well.

The 15 lb recoil spring all fired with no problem. The first 6 rounds on the 18 lb spring jammed. Used a Hornady Critical Defense full load and all worked fine. Do not know if the Federal is a true full load, it appears not to be. I have used the same P220 with an 18lb spring for many years with no jams from other manufactures, however did pay a bit more the the ordnance. Would check to see what the recoil spring tension is first. (Posted on 3/9/2020)

Combat Government loved this round. I was especially pleased that the Defender a three inch barrel was flawless this first time out of the box. Ordering more soon. (Posted on 8/21/2014)
