Hornady – “The Big H” – Nebraskan authority on all things reloading and ammunition, and responsible for creating some of the world’s fanciest bullets.
But Hornady’s not a one trick pony. They load all types of ammo, including cheapies that you’re meant to load at the range when you aren’t trying to dominate a competition or shoot targets in neighboring townships. Want proof? Exhibit A: this very webpage.
Hornady Frontier series 5.56x46. It’s meant for plinkin’, target shootin’, and stockpilin’, because it’s loaded to M193 specifications. Sure, the 55 grain full metal jacket will splinter inside of and otherwise be unpleasant to soft tissue, but the nonmagnetic, copper-jacketed bullet is vastly preferred for regular range work. Hornady places its muzzle velocity at 3,240 fps (20” test barrel), which is precisely the MV a basic M193 bullet should hit. Its 0.243 G1 ballistic coefficient indicates supersonic velocity until 705 yards, which is similarly characteristic of the M193 spec 5.56 cartridge.
Frontier ammunition is loaded with new military-style brass cases (reloadable) and Boxer primers (noncorrosive). This ammo is packaged in black plastic field boxes. A nice touch! Looks much better in storage that way.
